Debugging AI feels more like guessing than debugging code

That feeling is real because AI debugging often lacks the crisp determinism people are used to in traditional software. In normal code, a bug usually has a traceable path. In AI systems, the failure may come from prompt wording, retrieval quality, hidden context, randomness, or even the evaluation criteria.

When too many variables are changing at once, teams fall into guesswork. They tweak prompts, rerun tests, swap models, and hope the output improves, but they do not always know which factor actually mattered.

The escape route is disciplined observability. Log inputs, retrieved chunks, model settings, tool calls, and final outputs in one place. Once the system becomes inspectable, AI debugging starts feeling less like superstition and more like engineering again.
